The CHALLENGE

Yale University’s ambitious capital improvement project to provide an amenity space under the existing law school courtyard necessitated the complete excavation of the interior grounds. It required the erection of new structural retaining and foundation structures in support of the existing building and the new space, prior to replacing the landscape of the interior garden. This was all to be constructed while the building was in use through the summer into the autumn when class was in session.

The SOLUTION

The Laurenco waterproofing system was configured into a below grade blindside foundation waterproofing. It was installed onto a false perimeter wall and mud slab prior to the placing of the structural concrete foundation walls and slab. The modular nature of the sheet rolls and adhesive cans and their cold process application expedited the logistics of the installation in the confined yard as no specialized machinery, pumps, torches, or kettles were in tow or necessary. The lack of the need for these flame and heat elements for installation eliminated the possibility of smoke and fire hazards, and the low odor profile of the RMA material allowed for the successful installation of the waterproofing with little to no disruption to class in session.
