The CHALLENGE
Originally constructed in 1955, this split-slab parking deck system over the convention center incorporated a structural concrete substrate with the two-ply Laurenco waterproofing assembly and protection course, overlaid with an asphaltic paver system adhered using Laurenco adhesive. The deck services approximately 250,000 square feet of elevated parking area, forming the roof of the convention facility below.
The SOLUTION
During the 1997 renovation, the original paver system was removed and replaced with a 4-inch cast-in-place concrete topping slab; and due to the tenacious bond of the existing Laurenco membrane, it remained in place and was overlaid with an additional two-ply waterproofing system. Subsequent expansions in 2003, including parking ramps and additional deck areas, followed a similar split-slab configuration consisting of a structural slab, two-ply Laurenco membrane, protection layer, and 4-inch reinforced concrete topping slab.
