The CHALLENGE
Bradley International is billed as one of the busiest airports on the east coast and sees over 1.6 million passengers just in the summer months. Its onsite Sheraton Hotel is situated steps from the arrivals and departures areas of the airport. The re-waterproofing of its drive lanes and port cochere drop off and main entrance necessitated the demolition of its existing pavement and replacement in tight quarters with the hotel actively in use by guests. The importance of working without flame and disruptive odor was of great importance to ownership. The ease of installation without the need for specialized equipment and demanding storage requirements was important to the contractor.
The SOLUTION
The Laurenco waterproofing was detailed into a split slab configuration with a hot asphalt topping for vehicular traffic. This was accomplished with the standard RMA waterproofing with two layers of the standard protection layer prior to the placement of the asphalt black top pavement. Butyl tape detailing at transitions in plane and the use of PMMA at concrete sidewalk curbs were integrated into the assembly. The assembly was completed in a timely manner and turned back over to ownership for resumption of its usual airport related services.
